October 2019 Athlete's of the Month

Norco College freshman Devin Mansfield (Centennial High School) and freshman Kimberly Pena (Roosevelt High School), of the San Bernardino Valley College women’s cross-country team have been named the IEAC October Athletes of the Month.

In their inaugural cross-country season, the Mustangs have been led by Mansfield as their true number one runner. According to his coaches, Mansfield has set the bar high and has shown what it means to be the perfect teammate. He consistently encourages his teammates to push for the next level. At this year’s conference championship, Mansfield finished in the top 10 turning in a time of 23:07, a new personal record.

“Just being nominated for this award itself is rewarding,” states Mansfield. “There are so many deserving players and I am truly humbled and thankful for being selected. One of my goals for the remainder of the year is to break the 23-minute mark in the 4-mile race.”

Not only did Kimberly Pena lead San Bernadino Valley College to the 2019 IEAC conference championship over Chaffey College, she also claimed the 2019 IEAC Individual Women’s Cross-Country Champion turning in a time of 20:45.6 in the 5K run.

“Kim has been lights out all season and her impressive score came as no surprise,” states head coach Eric Abrams. “It’s great to see all her hard work pay off.”

“I feel honored to be recognized after all the hard work that we’ve all put in,” states Pena. “Our dedication led to a team and individual championship at the conference meet. We still have a lot of work to do, including my goal to finish as an All-American representing SBVC at So Cal’s and states.”
