IEAC Statement on Mt. San Jacinto College vs. San Bernardino Valley College Men's Basketball Game

On Saturday, February 19th, 2022 Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) men’s basketball team traveled to play against San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC). The contest was played to completion with the final official score of SBVC prevailing 101-92 in overtime.

The result of the game is being questioned due to two scoring discrepancies that occurred, one during the first half, and the other during the second.

At the conclusion of the first half, the official score card indicated MSJC 38, SBVC 43. While both teams were in their locker rooms during halftime, the official scorekeeper subtracted 2-points from MSJC, believing they had been erroneously awarded a 2 point basket rather than a personal foul in the scorecard. After the revision, the official score was updated to MSJC 36, SBVC 43.

Prior to the start of the second half, the officials questioned the scorekeeper regarding the 2-point subtraction from MSJC. The scorekeeper explained in detail, with the official accepting, and the game resumed from MSJC 36, SBVC 43.

At the end of regulation time, the official score indicated a tie of 86-86, sending the contest to overtime. However, questions remained regarding the deduction of 2-points for MSJC in the first half, and an unscored free-throw for SBVC in the second half.

According to the rulebook, any challenge to the score must occur immediately when the discrepancy is discovered, before play resumes. Because play continued to completion, the official score stated MSJC 92, SBVC 101.

In the spirit of fairness and integrity of the game, the tape was later reviewed by Tony Lipold, IEAC commissioner, and Daryl Gelinas, IEAC men’s basketball assignor. Each reviewer independently scored the game MSJC 88, SBVC 87, at the end of regulation time. The CCCAA follows the NCAA Men’s Basketball Playing Rules:

NCAA RULEBOOK | Rule 2 Section 9 Article 12
Compare their records after each goal, each foul and each charged timeout, notifying the referee at once of any discrepancy. When no error can be found, the referee shall accept the record of the official scorebook, unless the referee has knowledge that permits another decision. When the discrepancy is in the score and the error is not resolved, the referee shall accept the progressive team totals of the official scorebook.

On Thursday, February 24, 2022, Mt. San Jacinto College filed an appeal to the CCCAA Appeals Board for review. That appeal was denied. Mt. San Jacinto College may review Article 7.4.9 if the institution wishes to appeal the decision to the full CCCAA Board

San Bernardino Valley College is awarded the victory 101-92 over Mt. San Jacinto College.
