SBVC Outruns Rams to Start Second Round

SBVC Outruns Rams to Start Second Round

For the bulk of the opening half hour Tuesday, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team was pressuring the Victor Valley College defense, firing shots at the VVC goal to no avail.

Finally, in the 34th minute, the Wolverines broke through, and that started a frentic final 10 minutes as SBVC took a 3-0 lead at the half, before going on to beat the Rams 5-0 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game.

The opening goal came seconds after the Rams had cleared an SBVC corner kick. The Wolverines beat he offside trap, as the ball was sent across by Ernest Lomeli to Jesus Mendoza, who collected the ball and fired it past Sebastian Guzman to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

Less than seven minutes later, David Politron centered a ball to Jeremy Hurtado, who fired a shot from 25 yards that dipped just under the bar for the 2-0 lead. Two minutes after that, the Wolverines were buzzing in the VVC zone, and Jose Garcia made a nifty back heel pass to Emmanuel Casas, who fired the ball into the net.

SBVC widened the lead in the 60th minute, as Garcia was brought down in the Victor Valley penalty area, and Politron blasted the ball home from the penalty spot to make it 4-0.

On the defensive end, the Wolverines were tested in the early going, as VVC had a couple of chances to open the scoring, but were turned away by starter Adrian Munoz. He finished with three saves. Guzman made six saves in 77 minutes of action for the Rams, with Daniel Hernandez making three saves in the final 13 minutes.

SBVC has a bye on Friday, returning to action next Tuesday at Chaffey.
